Experiencing the Nativity in a new and lively light

Published in Cumberland News on Thursday, 24 December 2009

Pop Along To Bethlehem, Carlisle Musical Society and Stanwix School Choir, St Cuthbert’s Church, Carlisle. What a lovely, lively evening was to be experienced at this modern version of the Nativity story, written by musical director Steve Viney.

The chorus of the Musical Society rose to the challenge of the varied musical styles and impressed in both loud and quieter passages, the harmonies being confidently sung in the latter.
Particularly impressive were the two Roman soldiers at the front of the stage who gave strong and authoritative leads in both singing and movement. Several costume changes helped to add variety to the performance and the technical side was very well handled.
The sound was very clear and there were some lovely lighting effects showing up the church as I’ve never seen it before. I liked the lights on the two wooden angels especially. The children’s voices were very clear, but it was when they sang quietly, especially in the Gloria, where they showed that they could sing melodically as well as just loudly.
All the backing music was arranged and played by Steve Viney who had firm control throughout the whole performance.
This was an evening I was very pleased not to have missed – and I’m sure that this was the feeling of most of the audience which packed the church and gave a rousing reception at the end.
Well done all.
